Any unit that costs gold. Most core military units are gold units: the Knight line, the Archer line, Cavalry Archers, Men-at-Arms and most unique units.
Gold on the map is limited, so the question in a long game is how to spend it. Players protect their gold miners, add trade and switch to trash units once gold runs low.
