Phosphoru Rush

A Fast Castle that goes straight into a Castle and a unique unit, timed to hit before the opponent’s Castle Age army is ready. It is named after RedPhosphoru, the ladder player best known for it, and is also called a Phosphoru build or Castle into UU. It is less a fixed build order than a family of builds: the unique unit, the support units and the timing change with the civilization and the opponent.

The idea. Most players open with a steady Feudal Age and a large economy. A Phosphoru build gives up economy for timing instead. It reaches the Castle Age with fewer villagers than a usual Fast Castle, with stone for the Castle already banked, and accepts some idle Town Center time and lost villagers to keep that timing. Players who add extra villagers to make the build safer usually lose the timing that makes it work.

Surviving the Feudal Age. The build spends little on Feudal Age military, so it relies on defence. Early buildings and walls are placed to keep Militia and Scouts away from villagers, and towers are the usual answer to Feudal Age archers. Reaching the Feudal Age in good time matters for that reason: the towers need to go up before the archers arrive.

The units. It suits Castle unique units that cost only wood and gold, so a small food economy is not a limit. Common picks are the Portuguese Organ Gun, Korean War Wagon, Bohemian Hussite Wagon and Bengali Ratha. Rams, Mangonels or Monks are added when needed. Unique units that need a lot of food, or train slowly from a single Castle, fit less well. Many players face these units less often than Knights or Crossbowmen, which is part of why the timing works.

Playing against it. There is no single answer, and players still argue about the best one. The ideas that come up most are pressure in the Feudal Age that the build cannot simply wall out, forward towers, a Fast Castle of your own, Monks against the slow unique units, Mangonels, and siege to remove the Castle. Scouting the stone mining early gives the most time to prepare. See also Fast Castle and Castle Drop.
